Bio

Hugh Kerr is originally from the UK. Before settling in Hobart, Australia in 2010 he traveled extensively in the UK, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. He has worked as a geologist and environmental scientist. He works mainly in oil paints and pen and ink, and lives in Hobart, Australia. His work is cerebral, politically aware and surreal.  He is primarily self-taught and, through years of stylistic experimentation, has developed a unique style.

His work has been shown in a number of solo exhibitions in Tasmania from 2014 to the present as well as in group shows elsewhere in Australia and the UK. He has been shortlisted for a number of art prizes in the last few years including the 2024 North Sydney Art Prize, 2023 Henry Jones Art Prize, and 2019 45 Downstairs Emerging Art Prize.

The themes he examines include science and technology, nature and the environment, working life, politics, and the mechanics of human society.
